What is Tiantai Zen?
Dad taught: "The last time I practiced together, I talked about Patriarch Jinghui's lament that Buddhism was separated from society, which is also the consensus of modern masters, and Tiantai Zen is an effort to bring Buddhism back into society. ”
The consensus of modern masters, including Master Taixu, who proposed the Buddhism of life, some called human Buddhism, Patriarch Jinghui proposed Zen of life, and the modern Zen proposed by Dad, which can also be called Tiantai Zen, are all efforts to make Buddhism return to society, now let's see what efforts Dad has made.
Our father taught: "The architecture of Tiantai Temple has changed the traditional style of the temple, making the temple a scenic spot and more socialized, and the Tiantai teaching method is that whether you are a Buddhist or not, whether you understand Buddhism or not, you can directly and seamlessly connect with it, so that the profound and difficult Zen can become a Zen that everyone can directly do." "Do you remember the Zen that our family can do directly? Which ones are they? Being a human being, attention, and spirituality, is it not to be precepted and wise? These don't need to learn anything specifically, and many people may be scared away when it comes to precepts and wisdom, but when it comes to being a person, paying attention, and developing spirituality, everyone can understand it. "Don't let everyone meditate, go to Zen, read the public case, you can connect with everyone's life, this is of course a new era of Zen philosophy, this is not for the sake of change and deliberately change anything, but history to this stage, Mahayana Buddhism must return to society, Zen must return to people's lives, only such Buddhism is the Dharma, the form of the Dharma is not as good as the Dharma, which is all contrary to the purpose of Buddhism.
What Dad said was so exciting! Now the question is: are we still Buddhist, or Zen?
Dad's reply: "Yes! The essence of Buddhism is to universalize all sentient beings. Our socialization is in line with this purpose, the essence of Zen is human beings, and we always firmly refer to human beings, and what kind of people we refer to is the essence of Zen. ”
Our father said that the essence of Zen is human beings, that is, people who skim and pinch each other.
Dad taught: "Let's look at the great masters of Zen Buddhism in the past dynasties, who is not an honest person? If he is not an honest person, he will not be able to participate in Zen, let alone become enlightened, all the enlightened monks are honest people, simple people, otherwise it is impossible to become enlightened. The profound Buddhist principles are not thoroughly understood by everyone, let alone Zen, but in fact, my father made everyone become a Zen person, a Zen master, and don't talk about any words, so that you can directly become a Zen person and a Zen master. The epiphany is too mysterious, and my father led us directly into becoming Zen people, I am afraid that everyone has already become a Zen person and still does not know, this is the reason why my father preached these truths in the joint practice. Otherwise, you are already a Zen person, but you don't know it yourself, let alone introduce it to others, which is too bizarre. So my dad actually took everyone into becoming a Zen person and a Zen master, and I hope everyone understands that they have become a Zen person and a Zen master. ”

Be a Zen person
Dad is here to encourage everyone, sometimes Dad will give you a head drink, sometimes he will stuff a piece of candy into your mouth, all kinds of ways to get closer to Zen, to our own gods, to our own self.
Dad taught: "Please recall a few words on Tiantai Mountain, one is the Tiantai side: Bodhi was originally a tree, the mirror seems to be not a platform, there is nothing in the word, and it has already caused dust." The other is the purpose of Tiantai: the holy Dharma Dojo, to become a Buddha with virtue, to care for all sentient beings, to keep the world in mind, to harmonize the society, and to serve the country. There is also a place on the top of the Buddha: the body is mine, not me, the clothes are mine, not me, who am I? Who is me? This is the key to Tiantai Zen, which expresses the realm of Zen and the purpose of Tiantai expresses the necessity of socialization. Zen French (i.e.: The body is all I have, not me, the clothes are all I have, not me, who am I?) Who is me? It shows that only honest people can pursue the question of who is mine. ”
"And everyone learning music, in fact, has a direct relationship with being a person, everyone rehearses symphonies, rehearses chorus, and rehearses the blessing of Guanyin lack the spirit of people, and the spirit of people is the key to your success or failure, but also the key to the value of your life."
Dad said that we all lack the spirit of people, and we should reflect on ourselves, whether we lack the spirit of people, what is the spirit of people? A person, he should be affectionate and loving, have you ever entered the nobility and affection of the symphony when you were rehearsing the symphony; When you were blessing Guanyin, did you enter the great compassion of Guanyin? When you are rehearsing the chorus, when you are rehearsing the requiem, do you let this blessing and compassion in your heart flow out naturally? This is the human spirit. In our lives, do we have the spirit of human beings, or are they habits?
Daddy taught:
"Please note that your identity has already changed, but you just don't have to experience it, you have been a Zen master for a long time will definitely understand the case, the edge, this is a natural thing, if you introduce to the destined person, the destined person will immediately benefit, so that your career, family life immediately changed. Just imagine, an entrepreneur who talks about being a man will have a prosperous business, and a family that talks about being a man will have a happy life. Therefore, the mission of our family is to be a Zen person and a Zen master ourselves, and to introduce this new era of Zen Buddhism to those who are destined to do so, so that others can immediately become Zen people and Zen masters. ”

Be a Zen master
Everyone's mission is to be a Zen person and a Zen master, to be a person with the spirit of being a man, to be an honest person and a good person, and then to introduce them to others, so that others can also become Zen people and Zen masters.

In order to be responsible for the country and society, my father proposed the "separation of powers" and "two absolutes" in Tiantai Temple very early, which is to ensure that Tiantai Temple implements the separation of powers of the supremacy of the Sangha in the internal management while serving the country with socialization; At the same time, we will ensure that our family will always maintain the two absolutes of loyalty to the party and the country. ”

Insist on being an honest person
The supremacy of the Sangha rather than the supremacy of the individual is a return to the idea of the equality of all beings of the Buddha, because the Sangha is not a place to fight for power, it is a place to talk about spiritual practice, so everyone needs to be equal. This is different from the society, the society must be subordinate to the superior, for example, an enterprise needs to have a chairman, general manager and other people who can make decisions, and also need to have people who can do things to follow the instructions of the leaders above. My father implemented the separation of powers in Tiantai Temple, that is, as the abbot, he dismissed all powers and was only responsible for guiding the practice and teaching the Dharma; supreme power is vested in all permanent residents; The guest hall in charge of specific affairs is selected by the permanent residents, and the daily affairs are also supervised by the permanent residents. The various methods are to keep the power at a distance from the practitioners, which is anti-secularization and a return to the spirit of the Buddha to the spirit of practice.
Daddy taught:
"Now after talking about these basic truths, the key is to practice concentration while insisting on being an honest person, how to implement it in music learning, and let the power of Zen help you become a talent."

Be a good person
This is the content of this joint practice on December 1, 2020, this time you can look back and take a look at it repeatedly, and have a good experience, my father said, it is some of our new formulations, life, attention, spirituality, these do not need to learn any knowledge, these are actually Zen, is practice. Therefore, you have to learn Zen and practice, and you don't have to be in your home every day, and you don't have to say that you want to go to the temple every day. If you don't object to it at home, you make incense, and the water supply is of course very good. If your family is disgusted, then you can get rid of these forms, just talk about being a human being, and then, when you are doing things, train to concentrate, train not to think, train to devote yourself wholeheartedly, this is practice, this is meditation. And there is no form of this kind of practice, he will not be disgusted by the family, and after you have learned this kind of practice, you can share it with your family, and you will definitely be able to bring him in. Because of this kind of practice, any fixed form has been removed, and when it comes to the form of religion, it is actually easy for some people to be disgusted and wary, but if you talk to everyone about being a person and paying attention, and you yourself have benefited and shared, you will definitely be able to bring more people in, and this is the direction of all of us. If you can't do it, you might as well remove these forms and fences, and then you can attract more people and help more people.
The "separation of powers" and the "two absolutes" are the concrete embodiment of Dad's pursuit of bringing Buddhism back to society. This is my father's pursuit of bringing Buddhism back into society, and it is implemented on these two points. Our master Jinghui Patriarch felt that Buddhism was separated from society, and many eminent monks actually had such a consensus, and my father was also deeply aware of this, so my father took this practical effort. As long as we all do this, we will definitely be able to influence the people around us, and then affect more people.
My father said that Mahayana Buddhism must return to society, and Zen must return to people's lives. Dad used two musts, why is it necessary in Dad's place, but not in ours? What did you learn from this sentence? Do you feel Dad's emotional world? Dad said that Buddhism should return to society, which is the need of the times, the needs of society, and the needs of Buddhism, because Dad has the whole society in his heart, this era, and Buddhism, so Dad naturally feels that this is necessary. Dad's pursuit is different from ours, so it is decided that Dada is a sage and we are mortals.
Really be a good person
So through this, everyone once again feels the difference between saints, in fact, the most core is on this emotion, the saint, his emotion, he is not for himself, but for an ideal, for everyone. When you really develop that emotion, a lot of things don't matter. Are you still bothered to be there for all those trivial things? You have sentient beings in your heart, many people, and you still worry about a little thing? Therefore, this sublimation of emotion, this change of character is the key to our cultivation.
So, how to implement it? It is necessary to start from being a person, to start from being a good person, and everyone must often reflect on it, that is, we must also often reflect on whether what we say can be combined with life. We talk every day that we want to change ourselves, but what we say is inconvenient to implement in the end. Always reflect, am I really a good person? Am I good to others? Am I just for my own good? Always ask yourself this question. And then what I'm doing now is really taking responsibility for my own life? What is my purpose in life? These are questions that we often have to reflect on.
